This year I am taking algebra, which is cool because most seventh graders do not get the chance to take this class when they are in seventh grade. So far, this has been a much more exciting way to learn math than any way I have ever learned it. Instead of using the textbook, which we have not done once this year, we solve real world problems. I like algebra because it gives you more complex problems that actually make you think. We recently did a project where we had to use proportions. What we did was pick out some kind of action figure and some small object to put next to the action figure. Then we had to make a model of the object that was the same size compared to us, as the real object was compared to the action figure. This was a fun project and I can't wait to see what other interesting projects and activities we will be doing this year.

Movie Prop Project

In Algebra class we got to do a very cool project. That was the movie prop project. In this project we had to build a movie prop that proportional to the real object using ourselves vs. a doll as the scale. The first thing we had to do was pick out the object and doll we were going to use. I chose a nine volt battery and used one of my sisters' dolls as the model. Then I found out what number I needed to multiply every dimension by to get the dimensions for the prop that I had to build. Finally, I built the prop after measuring every aspect of the battery including things like sections of color, and the words. The project was difficult and stressful, but the final product turned out very good. The proportions were almost perfect. Doing this project I learned a lot too.
From doing the movie prop project I learned a lot about proportions. One thing I learned is that the same number works for every dimension when multiplying to find out the measurement of the prop. I calculated this for each individual dimension instead of just multiplying each of them by the same number. That made the project very difficult because of all the extra work it took to do that. I also learned more about how to properly use proportions and ratios and all that fun stuff. The last thing I learned was that I need to manage my time better! Waiting until the last minute to do an algebra project is not smart!
